You may wonder why I named my pottery studio Refuge.
Several years back, my husband and I started an LLC for tax purposes. We also bought our property in North Georgia under the same LLC. At the time we chose “Rivendell Cleft.” Maybe you’ve read Tolkien’s books or seen the movies, “The Lord of the Rings”? If so, you’ll recall that the elves were trying to get back to their home place called Rivendell. It was a place of peace and refuge. And it was an analogy of heaven. And we’ve always liked the old hymn, “He Hideth My Soul”, in which one oft repeated phrase is “He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock, and shelters me there with His hand.” As Christians, both of these thoughts came together in the name of our LLC. We want our home, our land, to be a place of peace and rest, of refuge, for any and all who come to visit. Our desire is to glorify God with what He has so graciously given us.
So when it came time to call my pottery endeavor something, Refuge Pottery just made sense. My desire is that these little offerings will make a smile come to your face, or give you a moment’s peace, as you start your day or set a table. If that happens even once, it will be worth it.
“Rivendell was the perfect house, whether you liked food or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear and sadness.” -J.R.R. Tolkien.
